MANAGEMENT IS AN ART

Management is an art if it qualifies all the attributes of the art. An art is regarded as systematic application of skill or knowledge in achievement of goals. Art presents the methods and ways of doing things or tasks. It is a personalized process and based on the practice over a long period of time.

Management is an art because of the following features:

PERSONALISED SKILL: Art involves personal skill. For example: all musicians learn same ragas but they apply these ragas according to their personal skills which makes them different.

In management also, managers learn same principles and theories. But their efficiency depends upon how well they use these principles under different situations by applying personal skills to achieve the goals of the organisation.

SYSTEMATC BODY OF THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE: In every art, there is some systematic and specific study material to gain theoretical knowledge. For example: Book on Techniques of Cooking is available in cookery.

In management also there is systematic and organized body of knowledge available which can help in acquiring managerial studies.

RESULT- ORIENTED APPROACH: Management aims at getting best out of the available resources. This means achieving the targets of the firm at lowest cost with maximum productivity.

BASED ON PRACTICE: An artist becomes perfect in his art if he practices on regular basis. Similarly, management always aims to achieve high. This effectiveness and efficiency can be achieved through regular practice.

CREATIVITY: Every art has an element of creativity and in this sense also management is one of the most creative art as it is concerned with getting work done through others by motivating them to work and coordinating their activities.

Apart from above, various management thinkers are of the view that:

ACCORDING TO J D MOONEY AND AC RAILEY

“Management is the art of directing and inspiring people.”

ACCORDING TO MARY PARKER FOLLETT

“Management is an art of getting things done through others.”

ACCORDING TO HAROLD KOONTZ

“Management is an art of getting things done through others with people in formally organized groups.”

Thus, management is an art as it consists of all the features present in the art.
