It is that time for which the employer pays, but from which he obtains no production. In other words, idle time is the difference between the time shown by the time card and job card. The idle time is usually caused by a sudden fault in machine or equipment, power failure, lack of orders for the product, inefficient work scheduling, defective materials and shortage of raw materials etc. The accounting treatment of idle time is that it is treated as indirect labor cost and should, therefore, be included in manufacturing overhead cost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong>Idle\nTime = Total Time spent by a worker \u2013 Actual Time spent on production.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EXAMPLE:<\/strong>&nbsp; The normal weekly working hours of a worker are 48 and he is paid @ $8 per hour. If he remains idle for 6 hours due to power failure, then the cost of 42 hours would be treated as direct labor cost and the cost of 6 hours (idle time) would be treated as indirect labor cost and included in manufacturing overhead cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"604\" height=\"83\" src=\"https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image.png\" alt=\"EXAMPLE\" class=\"wp-image-3288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image.png 604w, https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-300x41.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Idle time is paid time that an employee, or machine, is unproductive that is a result of factors that can either be controlled or uncontrolled by management.<\/li><li>Idle time can be classified either as normal or abnormal.<\/li><li>Minimizing idle time is key if a business wants to maximize efficiency over long periods of time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"types-of-idle-time\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TYPES_OF_IDLE_TIME\"><\/span><strong>TYPES OF IDLE TIME<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/slide_23.jpg\" alt=\"TYPES OF IDLE TIME\" class=\"wp-image-3289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/slide_23.jpg 960w, https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/slide_23-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/slide_23-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption>ACCOUNTING TREATNMENT OF IDLE TIME<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NORMAL IDLE TIME<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Normal Idle time is inherent in any work situation and cannot\nbe eliminated. This represents the time, the wastage of which cannot be avoided\nand, therefore, the employer must bear the labour cost of this time. But every\neffort should be made to reduce it to the lowest possible level.<strong> Following are some of the examples of normal idle time:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(i) The time taken in going from the factory\ngate to the department in which the worker is to work, and then again the time\ntaken in coming from the department to the factory gate at the end of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(ii) The time taken in picking up the work\nfor the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(iii) The time which elapses between the\ncompletion of one job and the commencement of the next job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(iv) The time taken for personal needs and tea breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(v) The time lost when production is\ninterrupted for machine maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(vi) The time lost due to waiting for job,\ninstructions, drawings, the prints, material etc. or due to machine set-up time\nwhich are normal to production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ABNORMAL IDLE\nTIME<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is that time the wastage of which can be avoided if\nproper precautions are taken. <strong>Abnormal idle time<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>is such idle time that given the situation is\nconsidered controllable and should have been avoided if due care was taken. In\nother words abnormal idle is most of the time result of mismanagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of abnormal idle time can be cited as below:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(i) The time wasted due to breakdown of\nmachinery on account of the inefficiency of the works engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(ii) The time wasted on account of the\nfailure of the power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(iii)The time wasted due to shortage of\nmaterials on account of the inefficiency of the store\u00adkeeper or the purchasing\ndepartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(iv) The time wasted due to unnecessary\nwaiting for instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(v) The time wasted due to unnecessary\nwaiting for tools and raw materials, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(vi) The time wasted due to strikes or\nlock-outs in the factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"causes-of-idle-time\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CAUSES_OF_IDLE_TIME\"><\/span><strong>CAUSES OF IDLE TIME<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are various causes of normal idle time and abnormal\nidle time. So the causes are classified into two categories on the basis of\ntypes of idle time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAUSES OF NORMAL IDLE TIME<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) Travelling time from one job or department to\nanother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) The distance covered between the factory\ngate and actual place of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) Elapse of time between finishing one job\nand starting another job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(4) Time spent to overcome fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(5) Tea and lunch breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(6) Machine or job setting-up time etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAUSES OF\nABNORMAL IDLE TIME<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(a) Temporary lack of work,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(b) Machine breakdown,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(c) Power failures,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(d) Shortage of raw materials,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(e) Waiting for tools,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(f) Waiting for jobs due to unplanned\nproduction,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(g) Stoppage of work due to managerial policy\ndecisions,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(h) Strikes and lockouts, and&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(i) Floods, earthquakes, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"accounting-treatment-of-idle-time\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ACCOUNTING_TREATMENT_OF_IDLE_TIME\"><\/span><strong>ACCOUNTING TREATMENT OF IDLE TIME<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Accounting treatment of idle time depends upon the categorization\nof idle time. The following specimen shows the treatment in the costing\nrecords:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"775\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/idle-time.jpg\" alt=\"idle time.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-3290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/idle-time.jpg 775w, https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/idle-time-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/idle-time-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px\" \/><figcaption>ACCOUNTING TREATMENT OF IDLE TIME<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The normal idle time and abnormal idle time treatments is\nas follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ACCOUNTING\nTREATMENT OF NORMAL IDLE TIME<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two methods of treating normal and unavoidable idle\ntime costs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inflated Wage\nRate Method:<\/strong> Under this method, normal and unavoidable\nhours are ascertained and the direct labor cost per hour is accordingly\nincreased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Overhead Method:<\/strong> Under this method, the cost of normal idle time is charged to works <a href=\"https:\/\/commerceiets.com\/overhead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"overhead (opens in a new tab)\">overhead<\/a> account. But this method is less scientific since an element of direct cost is treated as indirect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ACCOUNTING TREATMENT\nOF ABNORMAL IDLE TIME <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also two methods of treating the abnormal idle\ntime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Overhead\nMethod:<\/strong> under this method, cost of abnormal idle\ntime is considered as a part of the works overhead. It will be better to\napportion the idle time costs to different departments so that a clear picture\nmay be available to the management so that it may take necessary remedial\naction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Costing\nProfit and Loss method: <\/strong>Under this\nmethod, such costs are transferred to Costing Profit and Loss Account and thus\nthese are treated as loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"control-over-abnormal-idle-time\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CONTROL_OVER_ABNORMAL_IDLE_TIME\"><\/span><strong>CONTROL OVER\nABNORMAL IDLE TIME<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Idle time can be controlled,\nthus:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(i) There must be planned production and\nproper supervisions, so that idle time will be reduced to a minimum level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(ii) Jobs in hand should be planned in such a\nmanner that the workers do not have to wait for the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(iii) Instructions and drawing must be clear\nso that the workers are not confused or have to wait for clarifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(iv) Proper inspection and maintenance of the\npower plant must be made to avoid frequent power failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(v) Timely supply of materials, proper maintenance of plant and machinery, adequate power supply will no doubt reduce the abnormal idle time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Also
